Abstract

Three terms, ḥwt, ḥwt-wrt and ḥwt-ʿnḫ are discussed. Contrary to the recent suggestion, the identification of the ḥwt-sign as a rectangular enclosure seen in plan view with the small rectangle in the interior representing an edifice is defined. Similarly, the traditional interpretation of ḥwt-wrt as a ‘law court’ rather than a central bureau of the vizier is upheld. Finally, A.H. Gardiner’s interpretation of ḥwt-ʿnḫ as the king’s living or dining room is sustained in contrast to the notion of it being a council to the sovereign.
