Abstract

The unique object presented in this article is a sherd with some hieroglyphic signs scratched on its surface. At first glance this ostracon may seem to be of pharaonic origin. However, under throughout examination, by both a ceramologist and Egyptologist, it turns out to be something completely different – namely a quite unattended testimony of a Coptic monk’s interest in the past of the Theban necropolis where he resided, an interest avid enough that the man considered it worth his while to copy on a stray sherd these strange and incomprehensible signs which had attracted his attention.
