Abstract

The paper deals with papyrological evidence concerning the short occupation of Egypt by Queen Zenobia of Palmyra and the recovery of the province by Emperor Aurelian in AD 272. Was the prefect of Egypt Statilius Ammianus appointed by Zenobia and simply reappointed by the emperor, or did he rather come to Egypt only with the troops of Aurelian? In spite of several attempts by leading specialists at restoring his career under both rulers, the few fragmentary papyri referring to him do not allow to see the prefect as a turncoat.
